We want to talk about relationships, connection, diversity: things at the root of being able to leave this world just a little bit better than when we came into it. In late 2003, Gathering released “A Holiday Celebration.” Combining diverse instruments such as the Australian didgeridoo with Irish pipes, Spanish flamenco with Japanese taiko drumming, and the Hawaiian ukulele with Caribbean steel drums, all on a backdrop of traditional American jazz, the album celebrates cultural diversity and collective imagination.

Rusty Gillette is a musician who has blurred the lines between musical traditions since the 1970s. As he is representative of global performers who are exploring a whole tapestry of sound, making world music the colors of their palette, he was a great choise to start this series.

I want to talk about relationships, connection, diversity: things at the root of being able to leave this world just a little bit better than when I came into it. Musical Stories is that kind of project. It's about our roots and the stories that have shaped our American world. The songs are beautiful, classical art-song settings of American folk songs, mostly rooted in the Scots Irish immigration. There is always great beauty and mystery in such songs; they are links to some far off world, but echoing feelings and stories that could as well be contemporary because the topics of the stories of peoples’ lives do not really change that much over the course of history.

Ron Kobayashi, backed by bassist Baba Elefante and percussionist Steve Dixon, plays with a wealth of contemporary passion and sometimes fury on the nine cuts, all originals by himself and Elefante. Kobayashi’s deft, fluid style brings to mind the best of David Benoit, Chick Corea and, at times even Bruce Hornsby. Baba Elefante’s fretless bass is a consistent wonder, his solos displaying all the singing sonority that his instrument can offer. Steve Dixon is a sensitive yet propulsive drummer, always spurring the music onward, changing in timbre according to the need.
